Heung Yuen Wai Highway (HYHW) of approximately 11 km in length, comprising 5.5-km tunnels, 4.5-km viaducts and 1-km at-grade roads, is one of the main routes in the North District.

Lung Shan Tunnel

Lung Shan Tunnel is the main section of HYWH. It is approximately 4.8 km in length and is the longest land-based road tunnel in Hong Kong. Due to the mega scale of the works, two different types of tunnel construction methods were adopted simultaneously. Drill-and-blast method was applied at the southern section of the tunnel to cope with the hard ground condition. While the ground condition was a mixture of soil and rock at the northern section of the tunnel, a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) was deployed for excavation to cope with such complicated ground condition.

An Earth Pressure Balanced (EPB) TBM with a diameter of 14.1m has been adopted for the Lau Shui Heung to Loi Tung section, in order to overcome the excavation challenges due to the soil condition within the tunnel. The TBM operation started in November 2015, and finished in April 2018. The drill-and-blast excavation adopted at the northbound and the southbound tubes for the Fanling Highway to Lau Shui Heung tunnel section, was completed on 24 July 2017 and 15 August 2017 respectively.
