Heung Yuen Wai Highway (HYHW) of approximately 11 km in length, comprising 5.5-km tunnels, 4.5-km viaducts and 1-km at-grade roads, is one of the main routes in the North District.
From Sha Tau Kok Road Interchange to Lin Ma Hang Road Interchange
The main viaduct from Sha Tau Kok Road to Lin Ma Hang Road Interchange is approximately 3.3 km long, connecting the Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point at its north end, and Lung Shan Tunnel and the Fanling Highway Interchange at its south end.The viaduct is composed of four sections, and formed by 2,864 pieces of massive precast segments, each of which is about 2.5m to 2.9m long, 17m wide and 2.5m high. The weight of each segment is about 40 to 77 tons, which is equivalent to about the weight of two to four double-deck buses. The road and viaduct construction works involved a lot of traffic diversion, and diversion of overhead power cables and underground utilities. The traffic and underground utilities diversion at the Sha Tau Kok Road Interchange and Ping Yeung Interchange were particularly complicated , which would affect lots of the nearby residents, construction sites and government facilities. The project team adopted crawler cranes for most of the viaduct construction. Those cranes lifted the precast segments one by one for erection, which reduced noise and the area and time of road closure.
